Filled by the cool mountain waters of
the Gauley River and surrounded by striking sandstone cliffs, West
Virginia's largest lake encompasses over 2800 acres with
nearly 60 miles of shoreline Summersville Lake provides an ideal
setting to relax and unwind, enjoy a family picnic, and pursue a
variety of recreational opportunities such as boating, skiing, driving
and more.
The steep mountain
gorges formed by Summersville lake and in the New River Gorge National
Recreation Area provide some of the most accessible and challenging
rock climbing opportunities in the East. Located within a short
walk or boat ride away are hundreds of climbing routes. 
West Virginia's rivers
offer an abundant variety of fish. The hard-fighting smallmouth
bass finds prime habitat in the rock ledges provided by the New
River and Summersville Lake. The Gauley River shelters the gigantic,
elusive muskie .
Some of the best trout fishing in the the nation can be found in
rivers flowing from eastern parts of West Virginia such as: Cranberry,
Williams, Cherry, and Upper Gauley.
West Virginia was recently
rated as one of the top five mountain biking destinations in the
United States by Mountain
Biking Magazine. You can explore the banks of Summersville Lake,
ride through the Monongahela National Forest, or try the new Cranberry
/ Tri-Rivers trail in Richwood. Many outfitters in the area offer
guided tours and rentals.
Nicholas County lies
in close proximity to a number of state parks and national recreation
areas that provide a variety of recreational opportunities: Babcock
State Park, Hawks Nest, Carnifex Ferry Battlefield, Gauley National
Recreation Area and New River National Recreation Area.
